Tips on choosing your boudoir photographer

You are looking for a boudoir photographer and there are so many to choose from – how to choose? Here are some tips to help you.

Look for a specialist

Go to a photographer’s website and you will often be amazed by all the different styles of photography they can do – not only do they shoot weddings, families and newborns but they also do boudoir photos.  Good on them – but perhaps they aren’t the right choice for your boudoir photo shoot.   A boudoir specialist does this style of photography day in and day out.  They will know how to guide you in choosing the correct outfits and be able to confidently direct you throughout the shoot.  They know the most flattering camera angles and poses to ensure you look your best.  Ideally choose a photographer who specialises in boudoir photography.

Look for a consistent style

I can’t stress the importance of choosing a photographer with a consistent style.  There should be a recognisable style running through the photographer’s work that you choose.  You should be able to see their work anywhere on the internet and be able to tell it is their work without even seeing their name on the copyright.  Some photographers’ work looks so completely different to their other photos, it looks like it could be taken by a different photographer.  This means that you have no guarantee what your images will look like.  By choosing a photographer with a consistent style you can expect that you will receive images of a similar quality to those you have seen online.

 Retouching

The shoot is only one half of the photographer’s job, the second half is the retouching – so ensure you are happy with the photographer’s retouching style.  I have seen some amazing work by photographers, but their retouching skills let them down.  Some photographers offer too little retouching – and personally I believe cellulite, stretch marks, goosebumps etc do not belong in your boudoir photos.  Other photographers offer too much, and their photos look like you are a Barbie who has no resemblance to reality.  Ideally you will find someone who strikes a balance between the two.  You want to look natural, but also look your best.

Check on their availability and turn-around times, and make sure they can meet your deadlines

Some photographers book shoots far in advance, and some photographers have very long turn-around times on providing your images.  I once had my family photos taken and didn’t see the gallery of proofs until 4 weeks after the shoot and it took another 4 weeks to receive my retouched images.  So make sure to find out these details, especially if you are doing the shoot for a special occasion (such as birthday, wedding etc) or if you need the photos urgently for work purposes.  It is really important that your photographer can cater for you and book your shoot in and provide your products within the time required.Boudoir Photographer

Outfit ideas for Brisbane boudoir shoot

I’m on a mission to ensure everyone brings flattering lingerie choices to their Brisbane boudoir shoot.  Here are a few more of my suggestions for you.

Corset/bustier

A corset/bustier is one of my favourite outfit choices.  It is a girl’s best friend!

If you are concerned about your belly area make sure to skip those that leave a gap between the corset and your undies.  You want one that goes all the way to your undies.  Also if you are concerned about your belly, skip sheer corsets.

Don’t forget to bring your jewellery to add that bit extra to your photos! Earrings, necklaces and bracelets.  Better yet match it to your outfits.

White Sheets

Lots of clients buy a heap of new expensive outfits for their lingerie shoot.  But if you are wanting to save some money, while still achieving gorgeous photos, skip the expensive lingerie stores and instead use some white sheets for one of your outfit choices.  It is super sexy, and one of my favourite styles to photograph.

A word about undies

There are so many styles of undies to choose from.  G-String, Brazilian, bikini cut, boy leg, high waisted just to name some.  So don’t limit yourself to just one style at your shoot.

Lingerie ideas for boudoir photo shoot – What to Wear Wednesday

So your boudoir photo shoot is booked in … now you need some lingerie ideas for your boudoir photo shoot.

It is all well and good for me to show you cute outfits my clients have worn for their shoot, but I think it is even more helpful if I can also show you where to buy an item, and how much it costs.  So I am going to take the guesswork out of it for you and provide you with some ideas for lingerie outfits.

My first outfit idea is …. thigh high socks!  Team them with a tshirt and undies and they become very sexy!

These thigh high socks are from Yandy, which is a US site, and they are $8.95 each.  I have also seen them at Big W, Target and Kmart on occasion, so you could also give them a try.

My next idea is also from yandy.com and is stockings with writing on the back of them. They have both ‘This way to heaven’ and ‘Love me, Kiss me’.  I have looked far and wide for these stockings but yandy.com is the only place I have seen them so far.

I hope this gives you some different outfit ideas.  I will be sharing more in the coming weeks.

Pink Diamond Studios

Pink Diamond Studios was a partnership between myself and my friend, Becky, who is a fabulous makeup artist.  Becky has recently had a baby and is also about to move to the United States.  I am sooo jealous as I have always wanted to live in America and hope to someday (or at the very least to holiday there every year)!  If you are a previous client, or were a fan of Pink Diamond Studios, it has now merged into Nikki Brown Photography and you can now contact me at www.nikkibrown.com.au.

Becky and I had a blast working together and here are some favourite images that Becky and I created together.  (The first photo is of the beautiful Becky herself!)
